Reading Outdoor Fabric Ratings: 10,000 mm, Breathability and What They Mean

Waterproof, windproof, breathable — the numbers on a fabric spec sheet drive both the cost and the end consumer's experience. Here is how to read them.

Buyers often compare two jackets on the waterproof figure alone. The number matters, but it is only one of several specifications that decide whether a garment performs on the mountain — or comes back as a return.

The waterproof rating (hydrostatic head)

A waterproof rating is measured as the height of a water column the fabric can withstand before water passes through. 10,000 mm is a common specification for ski and snow-sports outerwear, which is why you will see it across our ski jacket, ski pants and one-piece suit ranges. Lower ratings suit lighter, more casual use.

Breathability

Breathability describes how much moisture vapour the fabric moves away from the body over 24 hours. For high-output activities — climbing, ski touring, cycling — it is the difference between a comfortable layer and a wet one. A fabric that is waterproof but not breathable traps sweat inside.

Seams and construction matter as much as the membrane

A 10,000 mm fabric with unsealed seams will still leak. Ask about fully taped seams at critical points, water-resistant zips, storm flaps over the main zip, and adjustable hoods and cuffs. Construction is where a good factory earns its price.

Surface finish (DWR) and insulation

  • DWR finish stops the face fabric from wetting out so the garment keeps breathing in sustained rain.
  • Down insulation gives the best warmth-to-weight ratio; we specify RDS-certified down for traceability.
  • Synthetic insulation and fleece keep performing in wet conditions and are easier to care for.

How we verify it

Every fabric batch is tested on arrival with advanced equipment before it is cut, and both materials and finished garments are sent to SGS for inspection and testing. If you are building a technical range, send us your performance targets and we will propose fabrics that meet them.
